COUNSELLING
HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP
There are times in life when we can all feel emotional distress and pain, confusion or shame in response to life events such as redundancy, deteriorating social, family or work relationships, illness, bereavement or traumatic experiences.
It can help to have a safe, confidential and non judgemental space to start to speak with a caring other of what is feeling too difficult to voice to those we are close to.....or perhaps it feels like there is no one close enough to talk to. Counselling is a space to begin to speak of some of these difficult thoughts, to release some of the emotions and to experience the accompanying relief, to understand the internal and external conflicts that exist and to begin to see with more clarity, the validity of your own feelings and experience. You can begin to sense more vividly what needs you have and how to act on them.
Counselling is a collaborative experience with you leading the process with what you want to address and with some idea of what you would like to gain from counselling, and with me accompanying you along the way with my openness to you, my capacity for empathic respect and my many years of experience and training.
Our counselling relationship together is important. It is a safe place for you to feel received and understood by me. However, it is also good to be prepared for some of the tensions and difficulties you can feel within your friendships and family relationships to arise between us. I promise to meet these with respectful authenticity. This can be a true gift of counselling for both of us to openly explore and hopefully resolve and from which we can both mutually grow.

This has been in a variety of contexts: as staff counsellor for a large hospital trust; as a counsellor for an IAPT mental health service in GP surgeries with people from all walks of life; a hospital secondary care mental health service for those who have had more complex mental health problems; within a hospital epilepsy department and for several community counselling services, as well as privately.
If you have experienced trauma and know that you are responding to the present in ways that feel extreme, where you are beginning to avoid these evocative situations in order to avoid these extreme feelings or you are having flashbacks - you know yourself how you could respond differently but have no power in the moment to do so - please look at my EMDR page. This is the therapy I use for working with trauma and PTSD.
What next?
You can call or email me to arrange an initial consultation.
During the initial consultation we will work together to understand what you want to explore and to what end and agree a therapeutic contract, addressing how long we will work together and what kind of therapeutic support you need. This will involve exploring what of your history as well as your present experience is contributing to how you are feeling now. If you know already that you are suffering from PTSD, please refer to my PTSD / EMDR page.
Fees range from £70 to £120 for a 50 minute session, depending on circumstances and type of therapy / supervision.
